Get Ready for an Amazing Adventure on the Water

Captain Robert Wiggers has spent the better part of his life either on the water or learning about the water. His passion for the outdoors led him to study Marine Biology at the College of Charleston. Upon graduation, Robert spent 29 years working for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) Marine Resources Division. During his career at SCDNR, he worked in fisheries statistics, marine education and outreach, managed Capers Island, ran the South Carolina Marine Game Fish Tagging Program, and served as a Deputy Law Enforcement Officer.

A US Coast Guard Licensed Captain for 25 years and with more than 30 years living, working, and fishing here in Charleston, South Carolina, Robert says, “My life has been about fishing, and to watch others catch fish and enjoy the outdoors is extremely rewarding.”

The Significance of the Makau

When you look at the WIGS logo, you may think the hook symbol is just a regular fishing hook …. but it has much more meaning and relevance than any old fishing hook.

The “makau” is a symbol of enormous cultural importance in Hawaii and The Polynesian Triangle. It is a symbol of safe passage over water and brings good fortune and strength to those who wear it. The makau worn as a necklace or personal adornment may be made out of bone, stone, coral, turtle shells, or wood and is a prized possession that gets passed down from generation to generation.

It is a symbol of great respect for the sea and all its power, as well as the human connection to water and the majesty of aquatic creatures.

The Fleet

Most trips are run out of a 22-foot Scout Bay Boat powered by a 200Hp Suzuki Outboard. This boat can accommodate up to four anglers. The boat is an excellent platform for fishing open water like Charleston Harbor, Bulls Bay or even running offshore to some of the closer reefs.

Depending on the type of trip and target species, fishing out of a 21-foot Triton saltwater bass boat with a 200 Hp Suzuki is another option. Two anglers can fish comfortably out of this boat, and the shallow water capabilities make it perfect for stalking inshore species in tight places.
